SCD was filming at the same time as The Rookie. I was surprised as well that Nathan didn't have the time to also do Gary but I know they often spend 12 hours or more on set for a show like The Rookie. Even when playing a small part like Gary, he still would have to have alot of makeup before he could even do his lines so it might take significantly more time than I would imagine. It was such a fun role I hate that he had to give it up. Ahh, that makes sense. I didn’t think about how much time that makeup takes. It’s definitely a bummer that he had to pass, because he did such a great job with it. I love Alan and don’t doubt that he’ll also be great, but am bummed Nathan couldn’t do both. I really wish ABC would announce another season for The Rookie! Ugh, frustrating! Well, hopefully it will be soon.

Over the years, several shows have been saved this way.

Nathan pays homage to his school and teachers. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxKjoMzAjkH Sad to say this what being a teacher has become. So I guess this is it. I have made a decision with the support of my wife TeamDana Carroll and family. I am leaving the field of education. I have had so many wonderful memories. But it has become a toxic profession. I think of what I thought I would be doing as teacher. Opening minds, debating history inspiring the next generation to reach higher and learn from the past. But education has become something else. I think of all the things I did not sign up for....like micromanaging administrators, mental health counseling, blueprints with no freedom or flexibility( even though you can not enforce planning), not being considered an expert in my chosen field even though I have a graduate degree. Students overdosing on drugs and collapsing in my classroom when they get back from the bathroom. Active shooter drills. Teachers being armed. Knowing where it is safe to hide in my classroom. Feeding and clothing my students. Buying my own supplies. Being told I should be thankful I have a job and to get over myself. I am tired of the constant testing. We have testing coordinators at each school. Being told that if a student fails it is my fault not their fault. I am tired. Tired of everyone else knowing better and being chastised if I dare ask questions or challenge leadership. So this May, I am walking away. I am going to stay home for awhile (thank you Dana) and start a new chapter. Honestly, I’ll break even if I become a bankteller with no experience. But the truth is I will not miss what education has become. A soulless industrial education complex where admin cares more about the test scores than their faculty or students. I have loved teaching many of you. But it is time to ride into the sunset. Start enjoying life. And find happiness again.

Jonathon Carroll posted that on Facebook recently. I hate to hear that, but I've heard it and variations many times. The kids are hateful and disrespectful. The parents yell at the teacher when told their child was disruptive, disrespectful, refuses to do their work, etc. Then there is no time to teach because you're always preparing for tests. I'm sure there are bright spots but it must be draining and stressful trying to teach kids that don't want to learn. Of course nowadays the kids have their noses in their phones all the times

As a retired teacher with 33 years under my belt, I'd like to add my 2 cents.
First off, I love that Nathan values education and cares enough to thank those who made his meaningful. He's always been awesome about crediting his parents for the job they did in raising him and he's been totally supportive of Jeff and his role as an administrator, but this is the first time I've seen him speak so directly about his Catholic education and specific teachers. One of the first things that drew me to Nathan was his values and the way he treats people. This just reinforces it all. Damn, he's a good man!
Secondly, I sure can't disagree with the poster who responded about leaving the field of teaching. I retired 11 years ago for many of the same reasons that person mentioned and I know it's only gotten worse since then. One of my daughters and her husband are both teachers so I have a clear window into all that's going on. In some states, like ours, (Wisconsin) the state government has made teachers public enemy #1, taking away all bargaining rights, cutting pay, increasing class sizes, and blaming kids' failures on the teachers, as if the parents and students themselves have no part in it. We've also had so many more responsibilities assigned to us as we're expected to be everything to every kid. Oh yeah, and on top of it all, make sure you don't get shot.
I found working with kids very rewarding and I'm sure most teachers have made a significant difference in the lives of many of their students. However, way too many people think they know how and what to teach when they have absolutely no training in the field and that's extremely demoralizing.
I'm thankful for Nathan's testimonial but have to say too, that he was lucky he went through school when he did.

I am right there with the descriptions about teaching. I also left teaching after 35 years and never looked back. I think they are going to be facing some major teacher shortages all over the country. I know here they said they were a couple of thousand teachers short. I agree with Nathanfan that Nathan was lucky to go to school when he did and also a Catholic school is different. I thought in both public and Catholic schools over the years.

Nathan's mother must have been great to have raised 2 such wonderful men. (Yeah, Nathan is our favorite, too!)
